In that gap you get houses on town water with their own septic system in the yard, which catches people out when a tank needs work in a town that feels fully built up. All of this is land area rather than houses, and a main running past a property does not mean the property is on it, since plenty kept the well after the main went in.

Long Hill sold its sewer system, and the reasons are on the record. The township's wastewater collection and treatment infrastructure dated from the 1930s, the plant was frequently exceeding its capacity and discharging partially untreated effluent to the Passaic River, and voters approved a sale by referendum in 2019. The Board of Public Utilities signed off and New Jersey American Water became the provider in 2020, which made one company responsible for both the water and the sewer here. Since then it reports investing $31.5 million in the system, including $4.3 million cleaning and lining about 30,000 feet of sewer main. Useful to know before assuming anything about the age of what is under your street: some of it has been relined and some has not.
