Retaining Wall Construction

Block and boulder retaining walls that hold back soil and look sharp.

A good retaining wall solves a slope problem and lasts for decades. We build block and natural boulder walls with the proper base, drainage, and backfill so they hold ground, handle water, and stay put through the freeze and thaw.

How we do it

A wall is a structure, so we build it like one. The footing trench gets dug to the right depth and filled with compacted stone, the first course gets set dead level, and every course above it gets backfilled with clean stone as it rises, never all at once at the end.

Drainage is built in from the start, with fabric and a way for water to escape, because trapped water is what kills walls. Block or boulder, the finished wall stands plumb, sheds water, and stays that way.

Common questions

Retaining Walls: what people ask us

Block or boulder walls, which is better?

Block gives a clean engineered look and precise heights; boulder walls look natural and use what the land gives. Both last for decades when the footing and drainage behind them are done right.

Do retaining walls really need drainage?

Absolutely. Water building up behind a wall is what pushes walls over. Every wall we build gets stone backfill and a way for water to escape, which is why our walls stay straight.

How tall can you build without an engineer?

In most NJ towns, walls over about four feet need engineering. We build to code either way and will tell you honestly when your project needs an engineer involved.
