Before any mechanized excavation in New Jersey, N.J.A.C. 14:2-3.1 requires notice to the One-Call center not less than 3 business days and not more than 10 business days ahead, so a Monday call is not fully marked out until Friday. Once marks are down, mechanized equipment may not be operated within 2 feet horizontally of the outside wall of a marked facility until that facility has been exposed by hand. The rules define excavation to include drilling, grading and boring, so directional drilling is covered like any other mechanized work. Work that genuinely cannot wait runs under the emergency provisions, which is a defined notification process rather than an exemption.

How we do it
Every utility job starts the same way: markouts called in, the run walked, and the plan agreed before a machine starts. We open the trench to the depth the utility and code require, bed the line properly, and set conduit or pipe with the fittings and tracer wire the next contractor will thank us for.
Connections get made or coordinated with the town or utility authority, inspections get scheduled so nothing sits open, and then we backfill in compacted lifts so the trench never telegraphs through your lawn or pavement later. The job is finished when the surface is restored, not when the pipe is in.

Do you handle utility markouts before digging?
Yes, on every single job. We call in the 811 markout and wait for the marks before a bucket touches the ground. It is free, it is the law in New Jersey, and it is how everyone stays safe.
Can you tie a new line into the main?
Yes. We excavate, install the line, and make or coordinate the tap into the municipal main, working with your town or utility authority so inspections and permits are handled properly.
What New Jersey actually requires

What it costs
How much does directional boring cost in NJ?
$25 to $100 per foot
What moves it:
- The size of the bore, meaning the diameter of what is going in the ground.
- The difficulty, which is ground conditions, what is already down there, and how much room there is to set up.
- Setup and takedown, which is why a short bore costs more per foot than a long one.
Boring is not automatically the right answer. If open cut is genuinely available it is usually the smarter move, and we will tell you that rather than sell you the more expensive method.
How much does it cost to trench utilities in NJ per foot?
$22 to $300 per foot
What moves it:
- Terrain, which is the first question. Lawn is not the same as ledge.
- The service itself. A 50 foot water service and a 4,000 foot water main extension are not the same work priced at the same rate.
- Whether asphalt has to be cut and repaved.
- Whether anything has to be cut through, such as a hole under a foundation.
- Whether part of the run has to be bored rather than trenched.
A per-foot number with no context is close to meaningless in this trade, which is why the spread here is more than ten to one. The useful question is always what the run has to cross.
How much does it cost to run electric to a detached garage in NJ?
$10,000 to $15,000
What moves it:
- The size of the service going out there, because that changes the conductor and the trench.
- The length of the trench from the panel to the garage.
- What the run has to cross on the way, particularly a driveway or a finished surface.

What happens if you hit an unmarked utility in NJ?
