Vernon was a small farming township for most of its history. It was incorporated in 1798 and still had only 1,548 residents in 1950.
Skiing changed that. After the resorts arrived in the 1960s the population rose 181% over that decade and another 169% over the 1970s, reaching 16,302 by 1980. Great Gorge Village alone put up 1,356 units, originally slope-side vacation housing that later became permanent homes.
