Hydrants get hit, they leak, they fail a flow test, or the site gets rebuilt around them and they end up in the wrong place. JWSR replaces, repairs and relocates fire hydrants for municipalities, water utilities, property managers and private owners: excavation, new lateral and gate valve where needed, hydrant set plumb and restrained, then flushed, tested, marked and the surface put back. We coordinate the shutdown and the out-of-service notification as part of the job.
How we do it
A hydrant replacement is a small job with a lot of coordination around it. The water has to come down, the fire department needs to know the hydrant is out of service and when it is coming back, and the new one has to go in on a proper lateral with its own gate valve so the next person who works on it does not have to shut the main again.
We excavate to the tee or the existing lateral, set the new hydrant plumb and to grade with the break-away flange at the right height, restrain it so it does not walk under pressure, backfill and compact, then flush, pressure test and put the surface back. Drainage at the base matters more than people think: a dry-barrel hydrant that cannot drain is a hydrant that freezes.
Most calls come from one of four places. Somebody hit it. It leaks or will not shut. It failed a flow test. Or the site is being rebuilt and the hydrant is in the wrong place now.

Why do fire hydrants need replacing?
Four common reasons. It was struck by a vehicle. It leaks, will not shut, or the barrel is cracked from a freeze. It failed a flow test or the parts are obsolete and no longer available. Or the site around it changed and the hydrant is now in the wrong place, buried behind new curb, or too far from where the fire department needs it.
Who is responsible for replacing a hydrant, me or the water company?
It comes down to whether it is a public hydrant or a private one. Hydrants on the public system are maintained by the utility or the municipality. Hydrants on private property belong to the property owner, along with their testing, maintenance and marking. If you are not certain which yours is, that is the first question to answer, because it decides who pays.
How long does a hydrant replacement take?
The work itself is usually a day for a straightforward swap on an existing lateral. What stretches it is the shutdown window, the notification to the fire department, and whether a new tee and lateral are needed rather than reusing what is there.
Do you install a new gate valve with it?
Where there is not already a working one, yes, and we recommend it. A hydrant with its own valve can be isolated on its own later. Without one, the next repair means shutting a length of main and everybody on it.
What do the hydrant colors mean?
Under NFPA 291 they encode flow at 20 psi so a crew can read capacity on arrival: light blue is 1,500 gpm and up, green is 1,000 to 1,499, orange is 500 to 999, and red is under 500. Private hydrants are red. After a replacement the hydrant should be flow tested and marked for what it actually delivers.
Can you relocate a hydrant rather than replace it in place?
Yes, and it is common on a site rebuild. Relocation means a new lateral off the main, a valve, and coordination with the fire official on where the hydrant needs to sit for access and spacing. Worth raising early in the site plan rather than at the end.
Do you work for municipalities and water utilities?
Yes, and for property managers and owners with private hydrants. Same crews and same equipment either way. We handle the excavation, the connection, the restraint, the flushing, the testing and the restoration, and we coordinate the shutdown and the out-of-service notification.
What about the underground feeding it?
If the lateral or the main is the actual problem, replacing the hydrant on top of bad pipe just moves the failure. We install and replace the underground too, covered on our fire service lines and water and sewer main pages.
What New Jersey actually requires
