From a lawn mower to fiber lines across three states
A local dirt crew that grew into one of the area's go-to underground utility contractors, without losing the show-up-and-do-it-right attitude it started with.
JWSR LLC was founded in 2020 by James Watson, an Andover, NJ native, Eagle Scout, and volunteer EMT serving as 1st Lieutenant of the Wantage First Aid Squad. It started small, a landscaping outfit handling lawns and cleanups. But James kept getting asked for the harder work, the digging nobody else wanted to touch, and he kept saying yes. Before long, digging was the business.
By 2022 JWSR had traded mowers for excavators, dump trucks, and backhoes and moved into excavation and underground utility work. And the phone kept ringing. We started receiving a lot more calls for utility work, not from advertising, but from the level of attention and care we gave our customers. So we built a team of people who do utility work day in and day out. And we kept dedicated crews for our normal operations, the excavation, grading, septic, and other heavy equipment work we built our name on.
Today JWSR is a full-service utility construction and excavation contractor working across New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia. Water and sewer lines, service laterals, storm drainage, septic, grading, driveways, retaining walls, hardscaping, and land clearing. Homeowners call us. So do plumbers, builders, developers, and internet providers who need a dig crew that shows up and gets it right.
What has not changed since the glory days of riding on a lawn mower all day is how we work. Answer the phone. Show up when we say we will. Do clean work. Charge fair. That is getting rare in the trades, and it is exactly what you get with JWSR.

In 2025, JWSR was a corporate sponsor of the Vernon Rotary Club's Pump Track AED Project, which put a lifesaving defibrillator at the Vernon Pump Track where local kids ride. Read the story.
James also founded Sussex County Emergency Snow Removal, a volunteer network of roughly 40 local contractors who clear driveways and roads for police, fire, and EMS during serious storms, at no cost to the families involved, so police, fire, and EMS lose as little time as possible to a snowed-in driveway.
