Who supplies water in your New Jersey town

Three things this data shows that surprise people

Whole townships have no mapped public water. Sandyston, Walpack, Hardwick, Hope, Knowlton, Liberty have no public community water delivery area anywhere inside their borders. That does not mean nobody there gets a water bill: systems under fifteen connections fall below what the state maps, and shared wells and small association systems are common in exactly these towns. It does mean there is no municipal or company main to tap. Another 7 towns, Bethlehem, East Amwell, Franklin Township, Kingwood, Frankford, Frelinghuysen, Harmony, are served across less than one percent of their land, which in practice means one small pocket and wells everywhere else.

Being “associated” with a water company is not the same as being served by one. Franchise areas cover ground a utility has the right to serve one day. Delivery areas cover ground it serves now. Directories routinely blur the two, and NJDEP does not: it maps delivery only. We had this wrong on our own Lafayette page for part of a day and corrected it against this dataset.

Some towns are genuinely fragmented. Mount Olive tops the list with 16 separate systems inside one municipality. When a town is split like that, no single phone number is the right answer for everybody who lives there.

Situations this data will not show you

The state maps public community water systems, which means at least fifteen year-round connections or twenty-five year-round residents. Anything smaller is real but invisible to it. None of the following are unusual around here, and we work on all of them.

Whichever of these you are in, the trench, the pipe and the restoration are the same work, and it is work we do every week. Why an excavation contractor publishes this

Because we get asked it on nearly every water line we replace, and because the answer changes the job. On public water the purveyor owns the main and usually the curb stop, the connection is permitted through them, and somebody else can shut the water off while we work. On a well there is no valve to shut and no permit to pull from a utility, and the whole run belongs to the owner. Quoting one as though it were the other wastes everybody’s time.

Water is only half the picture. Joined against where sewer service is actually mapped, these same towns sort into four situations, and about a third of them turn out to be on wells and septic together: septic or sewer, and what your town actually has.
