Hackettstown sits in the valley along the Musconetcong River and was incorporated in 1853 out of Independence Township, named for the early landowner Samuel Hackett. These days it is best known as the US home of Mars.

So the authority you deal with here is a regional one that happens to be named after the town. HMUA also draws the ownership line plainly, which not every utility does: they own the pipe from the main to the curb valve, and the customer owns it from the curb valve into the building.
