What Stanhope was built on
Stanhope was a canal and iron town. The Morris Canal ran through it and the iron works and mill complex on the Musconetcong drove the local economy through the 1800s. The borough separated from Byram Township in 1904, and the mill site went on the National Register in 1977.
It shifted to a mostly residential town in the twentieth century, a change I-80 accelerated when it opened around 1974 and pulled traffic off the old downtown route.
Old canal and mill towns tend to have made ground along the historic alignments, plus a compact village core of small lots and aged service lines. It is worth knowing where the canal ran before planning a dig.
