What Hopatcong was built on
Hopatcong began as a summer place. The lake drew wealthy New Yorkers looking for a getaway, and Bertrand's Island amusement park grew up to serve them. It was chartered as the Town of Brooklyn in 1898 and renamed Hopatcong in 1901.
It became a year-round town later, when Interstate 80 put it inside commuting range and the seasonal housing filled in permanently.
That is the pattern worth knowing here: a lot of this housing started as seasonal cottages and was converted to full-time living afterwards. Septic systems and service lines sized for summer weekends often ended up carrying a year-round household, and lake-adjacent lots tend to be tight to work on.
