What Sparta was built on
Sparta's best-known neighborhood was designed rather than grown. The Arthur D. Crane Company dammed the Wallkill River in 1926 to create the 300-acre Lake Mohawk, which filled by March 1928, and sold it as a private resort community of summer homes.
Those houses started being winterized in the 1940s, and the roughly 2,600 member families around the lake are now largely year-round.
Around the lake you are often working on originally-seasonal houses that were converted for full-time use, which is exactly where undersized or aged systems show up. Lakefront lots also tend to be steep and narrow, which drives how equipment gets in more than the pipe work itself does.
