What Newton was built on
Newton has been the seat of Sussex County since 1762, when the courthouse and town green were laid out. It was incorporated as a town in 1864. Slate was the local industry for a long stretch: the ridges here were quarried from 1859 until about 1930.
Being the county's oldest built-up center, Newton has a downtown of genuinely old buildings and correspondingly old buried service lines, and the lots are tight in a way that decides how equipment gets in. The slate ridges that were quarried here also mean rock is not far down in places.
