Water in Mendham Borough comes from New Jersey American Water, not the town. The borough sold its water system to NJAW in 1992, and it is now part of NJAW's Short Hills interconnected system. NJAW supplies 1,819 customers in the borough, and the four original borough wells are still active, running about 120 to 150 days a year to let the aquifer recharge.
Sewer only reaches the village core: 1,448.3 acres, or 37.8 percent of the borough, sits inside the sewer service area, which hugs the Historic District along and north of Main Street. Everything outside that line is on septic, and the borough has no plans to extend sewer. The plant has headroom, running at 0.285 MGD against its 0.45 MGD permit, about 63 percent of capacity.
Sewer is the borough's own operation: the Mendham Borough Water Reclamation Facility at 35 Ironia Road is an activated sludge plant permitted at 0.45 million gallons a day, and the collection system it serves runs 126,288 linear feet of sewer line, roughly 24 miles, with 4 lift stations.
Some water mains here date to the 1960s and NJAW has been steadily replacing them. A 2021 project on Mountainside Road replaced 600 feet and rehabilitated 2,200 feet of 12-inch cast iron main installed in the 1960s. The same year a separate $3 million NJAW project replaced about 6,400 feet of aging main, 8 hydrants and 97 utility-owned service lines along Route 24 from Cherry Lane to Hilltop Road, and in early 2026 NJAW installed another 720 feet of 8-inch ductile iron on Mountainside Road between Ironia Road and Mountain Avenue.
