A fiber build in Hamburg, NJ: 18,000 feet of conduit and 220 homes

18,000 feet of conduit with handhole access points, 55,000 feet of fiber pulled through it, and 220 or more homes connected with a drop buried to the side of the house. In Hamburg, which is the town our yard sits in.

Most writing about fiber is about the technology. This is about the ground, which is the part that decides whether a build goes well.

Why the fiber footage is three times the conduit footage

Those two numbers confuse people, so it is worth explaining: 18,000 feet of conduit, 55,000 feet of fiber. Nothing was buried three times.

Conduit is the empty pipe in the ground. What goes through it is cable, and more than one cable runs the same path. A backbone run carries fiber for everything downstream of it, then distribution cable branches off toward neighborhoods, then individual drops peel off to houses. Several of those share the same trench and the same conduit run for part of their journey.

That ratio is the entire argument for conduit rather than direct burial. Put the pipe in once, and every future cable, repair and upgrade is a pull rather than a dig. Direct-bury fiber is cheaper on day one and it means opening the ground again for anything that changes. On a build this size the difference is a decade of disruption to the same streets.

Handholes, and why they are the part that matters later

The access points along the route are handholes: boxes set in the ground at intervals so somebody can reach the cable without excavating.

They are the least interesting thing on site the day they go in and the most important thing five years later. Every splice, every fault, every new customer added to a stretch that is already built happens at a handhole. A route with handholes in sensible places is a route somebody can work on. A route without them means a machine and a road opening permit every time anything changes.

Placing them is a judgment call rather than a formula, because it has to account for where the road can be worked, where a truck can stop safely, and where the next twenty years of connections are likely to come from.

220 homes means 220 lawns

This is the part contractors underestimate on residential builds and the part homeowners actually judge.

Each of those 220-plus customers got a drop buried to the side of their house. That is 220 separate properties, each with somebody living on it who did not ask for construction and who is going to look at their yard afterwards.

At that scale restoration is not the last five percent of the job, it is the job. The fiber either works or it does not, and it usually does. What varies between a good contractor and a bad one on a residential build is whether the neighborhood looks like anything happened.

Which is why a review of ours we are prouder of than most is one that says the restoration was practically invisible. On a build of this size, being unremarkable afterwards is the achievement.

What a build like this actually involves

  • Route planning against what is already down there. Every foot of this is in ground that already has water, sewer, gas and electric in it. The 811 markout is where the route gets finalized, not where it gets confirmed.
  • Choosing a method per stretch. Plowing where the ground is open and clear, boring under driveways and hard surfaces, open trench where an existing utility sits in the path, because state rules require a marked line to be exposed by hand rather than bored past blind.
  • Conduit, then handholes, then the pull. The pull is the fast part, which surprises people. Getting the empty pipe in the ground correctly is where the time goes.
  • Drops, one property at a time. 220 individual conversations, 220 individual restorations.
  • Restoration and follow-up. Grass grows back on its own schedule rather than the project's, so the job is not finished when the crew leaves the street.

Common questions

Why is more fiber pulled than conduit placed on a fiber build? Because several cables share the same conduit path. On this build 18,000 feet of conduit carried about 55,000 feet of fiber: a backbone run, distribution cable branching toward neighborhoods, and individual drops to houses, all sharing parts of the same route. It is one of the main reasons to place conduit rather than direct-burying cable.

What is a handhole and why does a fiber route need them? A handhole is an access box set into the ground at intervals along a conduit route, so a crew can reach the cable to splice it, repair it or add a customer without excavating. Placing them well is what makes a route maintainable. A route without them turns every future change into a dig and a road opening permit.

Is fiber to a house buried or run overhead? Either, depending on how the rest of the utilities in that neighborhood run. On this build the drops were buried to the side of each house, which means a small trench or bore across the property rather than a line from a pole. Buried drops take longer and need restoration afterwards, and they are not exposed to storms and falling limbs the way aerial is.

How long does the grass take to come back after a fiber drop? On its own schedule rather than the project's. Fresh disturbed ground seeded and hayed will usually green up within a few weeks in the growing season, and work done late in the year may not really recover until the following spring. Any contractor telling you it will look untouched next week is guessing.

Does a fiber build have to dig up the driveway? Usually not. Driveways and hard surfaces are normally bored underneath rather than cut, which is the whole point of having the boring equipment on a residential build. What forces an open cut is another utility in the path, since New Jersey rules require a marked line to be exposed by hand rather than bored past blind, or a bore that cannot get through what is down there.
