New Jersey has no statewide list of approved hydrant makes and models. The rule points somewhere else first: your municipality or your water purveyor decides, and only if they have not specified does the AWWA standard govern. So the honest answer to "what hydrant can I install" starts with a different question, which is who serves your address.
That surprises people who expect a state approved-products list. There is not one. What there is instead is a code that defers to the local water purveyor, plus a set of dimensional and layout requirements that are the same everywhere.
What the New Jersey rule actually says
N.J.A.C. 5:21-5.4, the fire hydrant section of the Residential Site Improvement Standards, is short and worth reading in the original:
“Size, type, and installation of hydrants shall be in accordance with the requirements of the municipality or the water purveyor or shall conform to the AWWA Standard for Dry Barrel Fire Hydrants, ANSI/AWWA C502.”
Read the order of that sentence. The municipality or the purveyor comes first. ANSI/AWWA C502 is the fallback, not the primary test. A hydrant that meets C502 and is refused by your water purveyor is still refused.
The rest of the section is specific and does not vary:

Two of those catch people out on a replacement. The pumper outlet facing the street is a setting-and-orientation detail that gets missed when a hydrant is swapped in a hurry. And the six inch minimum connection means a hydrant fed by an older four inch lateral is not simply a like-for-like swap; the lateral is part of the job.
Where the standard applies, and where it does not
N.J.A.C. 5:21 is the Residential Site Improvement Standards, so it governs residential development. It is the clearest published statement of what New Jersey expects from a hydrant, and it is what a residential subdivision is held to.
A private hydrant on an industrial park, a campus or a commercial site is a different chain of authority. There the governing document is NFPA 24, the standard for the installation of private fire service mains and their appurtenances, alongside whatever your water purveyor requires at the connection and whatever your local fire official enforces. The dimensional logic tends to be similar. The authority is not the same, and it is worth establishing which one you are under before ordering anything.
So which hydrants actually get installed here
In practice the field is narrow. The dry-barrel hydrants in common use in this part of New Jersey are made by a handful of manufacturers, and the ones you will meet are Kennedy, Mueller, American Darling and M&H, all of which build to ANSI/AWWA C502 and are commonly UL listed and FM approved.
Dry-barrel is the relevant type here, and the reason is climate. A dry-barrel hydrant holds the water below the frost line and drains the barrel after use, which is why the drain being blocked is such a common inspection finding: a barrel that will not empty is a barrel that freezes.
None of that decides it for you. Your purveyor may accept two of those makes and not the others, may specify a particular model, may require a certain barrel depth for local frost, and will certainly have a view on the connection. Ask them before you buy a hydrant, not after.
Who to ask, which is the part nobody publishes
Because the rule defers to the water purveyor, the practical first step is knowing who yours is, and around here that is genuinely not obvious. Some towns run three separate water systems. One township has no water department at all and four private companies. Several towns host a reservoir owned by somebody else entirely.

What does ANSI/AWWA C502 cover? It is the American Water Works Association standard for dry-barrel fire hydrants, which are the type used in climates that freeze. Manufacturers state conformance to it, and hydrants in common use here are also typically UL listed and FM approved. Conformance to C502 is a floor rather than a guarantee of local acceptance.
How far apart do fire hydrants have to be in NJ? The standard does not give a spacing figure directly. It sets two limits that together decide spacing: the average building area served per hydrant must not exceed 120,000 square feet, and no dwelling may be more than 400 feet from a hydrant measured along the street right-of-way. Layout follows from those two numbers rather than from a fixed interval.
Which way does a fire hydrant have to face? The pumper outlet must face the street. It sounds trivial and it is the detail most often missed on a replacement, because the setting depth and the orientation both get decided in the hole with the crew standing there.
Can I replace a hydrant without touching the lateral? Sometimes, but do not assume it. Street main connections must not be less than six inches in diameter, so a hydrant sitting on an older undersized lateral is not a like-for-like swap. The lateral, and the valve on the connection between the hydrant and the main, are part of the scope. That is a large part of why a hydrant replacement price has so little to do with the price of a hydrant.
Do these rules apply to a hydrant on private property? Not directly. N.J.A.C. 5:21 is the Residential Site Improvement Standards and governs residential development. A private hydrant on a commercial site, campus or industrial park sits under NFPA 24 for installation, your purveyor's requirements at the connection, and your local fire official.
