Here is a sentence you will not read on a pipe lining company's website: sometimes lining is the right answer. And here is one you will not read on most excavators' sites: sometimes digging is the wrong one. Both are true, and which one applies to your sewer comes down to what the camera actually saw, not to which contractor answered the phone first.
We are an excavation contractor. We replace sewer laterals by digging and by pulling and bursting along the existing path. We do not sell lining, which is exactly why this page can afford to be straight about when lining wins.
What lining actually is
Cured-in-place pipe, CIPP in the trade, is a resin-saturated felt or fiberglass sleeve inverted or pulled into the existing pipe, inflated against the pipe wall, and cured with hot water, steam or UV light until it hardens. The result is a new structural pipe cast inside the old one, jointless from end to end. The old pipe stays where it is and becomes a mold.
Done properly, on the right pipe, it is a genuine repair, not a patch. The trade-off is built into the method: the liner takes the shape of whatever it cures inside, and it occupies some of the pipe's inside diameter.
The decision, in one table

Notice what column two turns on: the condition of the host pipe, never the brochure. That is the same rule that governs pulling versus bursting, and it is why nobody can honestly pick a method before watching the footage.
The questions that sort a good lining quote from a bad one
If lining looks right for your pipe, it may genuinely be the answer. These questions separate the outfits that do it properly from the ones that sell it to everybody:
- Was the line cleaned and descaled before the final camera pass? A liner bonds to the pipe wall, not to grease. A quote written off a dirty-pipe video is a guess.
- What happens at the connections? Every branch line the liner passes gets sealed shut and has to be reopened, robotically from inside or by digging. Ask how many connections your run has and how each will be reinstated, because this is where lining jobs go wrong quietly.
- What is the finished inside diameter? On a six inch main losing a quarter inch of radius, nobody notices. On a four inch residential lateral, the same liner takes a bigger share of a smaller pipe.
- Is there a belly anywhere in the run? If the answer is yes and the quote is still for lining the whole line, get another opinion. Lining through a belly seals the pipe and preserves the defect.
- What is the design life, and is it in writing? Properly installed CIPP is engineered as a long-term structural repair. If the installer will not put a number and a warranty on paper, the brochure figure is doing the selling.
What the honest cost comparison looks like
We publish our own digging numbers, so here they are next to the alternative. A spot repair, digging up and fixing one bad section, runs $3,000 to $8,000 around here. A full lateral replacement runs $10,000 to $20,000, with depth the main driver. Lining quotes in this region commonly land in the same territory as replacement, sometimes under it, sometimes over, depending on length, diameter and how many connections need reinstating.
That overlap is the point people miss. Lining is not the cheap option; it is the no-restoration option. What you are actually buying is the driveway, the mature tree, the finished basement floor, or the landscaping that does not get opened. If the run is under open lawn, digging is usually cheaper, and the repair gets bedded, inspected and photographed before it is buried. If the run is under twenty feet of stamped concrete, the arithmetic flips, and it flips honestly.
One more cost note: root intrusion at a single joint does not need a whole-line decision at all. Ten feet of pipe in Bernardsville was a spot repair, done in a day, and the other ninety feet of sound pipe stayed exactly where it was.
Where trenchless promises go to die: the yard that was never the problem
"Trenchless" is the most persuasive word in this market, and it earns its keep under driveways and patios. But walk the logic on a typical failed lateral under grass: the trenchless job still needs an access pit at each end, the connections still need reinstating, and the lawn a trench would have crossed knits back in a few weeks for the price of seed. What did the premium buy? On hardscape, everything. On open lawn, a word.
Common questions
Is sewer pipe lining better than replacement? Neither is better; they solve different situations. Lining wins when the pipe is structurally continuous, at proper grade, and the surface above it is expensive to open and restore. Replacement wins when there is a belly, a collapse, deforming material like Orangeburg, a capacity problem, or plain lawn above the run. The camera footage decides, and any contractor picking the method before watching it is selling their equipment, not solving your problem.
Does pipe lining actually work? Yes, on the right pipe, installed properly. Cured-in-place pipe is a real structural repair used in public sewer mains for decades, not a coating. The failures you hear about are almost always the method applied to the wrong pipe: lined bellies, lined collapses, liners over unscaled cast iron, or branch connections that never got properly reopened.
How long does sewer pipe lining last? CIPP is commonly designed and marketed around a 50 year service life, and that figure is credible for a properly installed liner in a sound host pipe. An EPA-backed retrospective by Louisiana Tech in 2012 examined liners that had been in service 21 to 34 years and found no reason to expect they would not reach 50 and beyond. The number to be skeptical of is not the 50, it is the assumption that your pipe was a proper candidate in the first place. A liner in a deforming or back-pitched pipe does not get its design life.
Can a sewer line with a belly be lined? No, and this is the most common wrong recommendation we see. The liner conforms to the host pipe, so the sag remains, now sealed inside a new pipe. Waste still slows and settles at the same low spot. A belly is a bedding and grade failure in the soil, and the fix is excavation that re-lays the pipe at proper pitch.
Is pipe bursting better than pipe lining? Bursting replaces the pipe, lining repairs it in place, and the host pipe condition picks between them. Bursting handles pipe too far gone to line and can upsize the line; it needs pits at each end and clearance from nearby utilities. Lining preserves surfaces completely but needs a continuous, correctly graded host. On the wrong pipe, both are expensive mistakes.
Why would an excavation company tell me lining is the right choice? Because sometimes it is, and pretending otherwise costs us the thing this page is for: being the outfit whose read on the footage you can trust. We make our living on the jobs where digging is genuinely the answer, and there are plenty. Should I get a second opinion on a lining quote? If the quote arrived without a cleaning pass, without a connection-by-connection reinstatement plan, or for a line with a known belly, yes.
