Pipe bursting, pulling in place, or open trench: which one your water line needs

Two very different jobs both get sold as "replacing your water line without digging up the yard," and confusing them is how people end up comparing quotes that are not for the same work.

One of them makes a brand new path through ground that has never been opened. That is directional boring, and we have written about when to bore and when to open cut already. The other reuses the path the old pipe is already in. The new line ends up exactly where the old one was, and the old one either comes out ahead of it or gets broken apart and left in the ground. That is pulling and bursting, and it is what this page is about.

The distinction is not academic. Boring is decided by what is on the surface: a driveway, a patio, a slab. Pulling and bursting are decided by the condition of the pipe that is already down there, which nobody can see from your driveway and which changes the answer completely.

What each method actually does

Pull in place. Two small pits, one out at the street end and one where the line comes into the house. We grip the old pipe, fasten the new one to it, and winch. The old line comes out one end as the new one is drawn in behind it, through the same hole in the ground. The lawn between the two pits is never opened.

Pipe bursting. Same two pits. This time a cable is run through the inside of the old pipe and pulls a cone shaped head back through it. The head fractures the old pipe outward into the surrounding soil and tows the new pipe in behind it. The old line stays in the ground in pieces, shoved aside.

Open trench. Dig the run. It is the oldest method and it is still the right answer more often than trenchless marketing suggests, for reasons further down this page.

The question that decides between pulling and bursting

It is not your budget and it is not your lawn. It is whether the old pipe can survive being pulled.

Pull in place needs the existing line to hold together under tension long enough to come out in one piece. Copper usually does. Lead, being soft, usually does. Galvanized steel that has been rusting from the inside for sixty years often does not. It snaps, and now there is a broken pipe wedged in the ground and an open pit at each end.

Pipe bursting needs the opposite quality. The old pipe has to be brittle enough to fracture and get out of the way. Cast iron, clay, and badly corroded galvanized break the way you want them to. Ductile iron and modern plastics do not fracture cleanly and need a cutting head rather than a splitting head, when they can be burst at all.

So the material of your existing service is not a footnote on the estimate. It is the decision. Which method for which situation

Bursting can go up a size. Pulling cannot.

This is the one advantage that gets undersold, and for some houses it is the whole reason to pick bursting.

Pull in place puts a new pipe through the hole the old pipe made, so you are limited to roughly what was there. Bursting makes the hole bigger on the way through, which means a three quarter inch service can come back as a one inch service in the same operation.

If the complaint that started all this was pressure rather than a leak, that matters. A house with weak pressure at every fixture on an old galvanized service has two problems, a line that is failing and a line that is undersized, and bursting solves both on one mobilization. Replacing the same size pipe would have fixed the leak and left the pressure exactly where it was.

"No digging" is still excavation in New Jersey

Here is the part almost nobody explains, and it is the reason trenchless work does not skip the parts of the process people find annoying.

New Jersey's One Call rules define excavation as "any operation in which earth, rock or other material in the ground is moved, removed or otherwise displaced by means of any tools, equipment or explosive," and the list of examples includes "cable or pipe plowing" along with drilling, boring, trenching and tunneling (N.J.A.C. 14:2-1.2).

Read that against what a bursting head does. Its entire job is to displace earth. Bursting is not named in the list, but the list says "includes, but is not limited to," and the operative words are "otherwise displaced." Pulling a pipe through the ground is closer still, since pipe plowing is named outright. Neither one is a loophole. Both are excavation, and everything that attaches to excavation attaches to them:

  • You still call 811. Notice is required not less than three and not more than 10 business days before work begins (N.J.A.C. 14:2-3.1(b)). Business days, so a Monday call is not fully marked until Friday.
  • You still hand dig near marks. An excavator "shall not operate any mechanized equipment within two feet horizontally of the outside wall of any underground facility marked in accordance with this chapter, unless the underground facility has been first located by hand digging" (N.J.A.C. 14:2-3.3(a)1). A winch and a bursting head are mechanized equipment.
  • The markout has a shelf life. It stays valid for 45 business days from notification, and only if the excavator maintains the marks (N.J.A.C. 14:2-3.1(c)).

None of that is a reason to avoid trenchless work. It is a reason to be suspicious of anyone who implies trenchless lets them start tomorrow. It does not. More on how markouts actually work is in our 811 markout walkthrough.

The thing in your yard that will not be marked

This one is worth knowing before anybody bursts anything near your house.

The same rules define an "underground facility" as property used for the conveyance of water, forced sewage, telecommunications, cable, electricity, oil, gas and the rest. Then comes one sentence that changes what shows up on your lawn: "This term does not include storm drains or gravity sewers."

Your water service is a facility, so it gets marked. Your sewer lateral, which runs by gravity, is not, and neither is the storm drain. Nobody is coming out to paint them. The two lines most likely to be sitting in the same corridor as the work are the two lines the markout will be silent about.

That matters more for bursting than for anything else, because bursting works by pushing soil sideways. It is the one method that can damage something it never touches. And the rules do not care that the sewer was unmarked: an excavator has to "provide adequate physical support of all underground facilities on the site" throughout the work (N.J.A.C. 14:2-3.3(b)), and use reasonable care to avoid damaging them.

There is a rule that tells you roughly where the sewer ought to be. New Jersey requires sewers carrying sanitary flow to be separated from water mains by at least 10 feet horizontally, and where that separation is not possible, to sit in separate trenches with the sewer at least 18 inches below the bottom of the water main (N.J.A.C. 7:14A-23.6). Read that as a guide rather than a guarantee. It governs how sewers are designed against mains, and the service lines running to your house are not mains. On a house from the 1950s, "ought to be" and "is" are different statements, so somebody still has to find the thing, which usually means a camera, a locator, or a shovel.

What it costs, and why the method matters less than people expect

A conventional water service replacement in this area runs $8,000 to $10,000 for a 200 foot service. We quote that against a stated distance on purpose, because a price with no length attached is not something you can compare. Every driver behind that number is on our what it costs page.

People assume trenchless is the cheap option because less gets dug. Per foot, trenchless usually costs more, not less. The saving is never in the pipe and rarely in the labor. It is in what you do not have to put back.

A trench across a lawn is cheap to close, and the grass knits back in a few weeks. A trench across a paver walkway, a poured driveway, or a road that needs an opening permit and a proper patch is a different bill entirely, and the patch is visible forever. That is the actual arithmetic. If the run is open lawn, an open trench is very often the honest recommendation, and it has a real technical advantage too: an open trench lets the new pipe be seen, bedded on sand and inspected before it is covered, instead of drawn blind through whatever is down there.

What we run

We pull in place and we burst, in house, with our own equipment, and we open trench and directional bore. That combination is deliberate. A contractor who owns exactly one method will find a reason your job suits that method, and the honest answer on a lot of water services is that the fancy option is the wrong one.

What we will not do is quote a bore or a pull without a written price for the fallback. Rock ledge, a boulder, a pipe that snaps, a line sharing a trench with the neighbors: any of those turns a trenchless job into an open cut mid-morning. We tried to bore one driveway in Bridgewater five times before a shale ledge won and we dug it. The homeowner was not blindsided, because the open cut price was already on the quote before we started.

Common questions

What is the difference between pipe bursting and open trench? Pipe bursting replaces the line along its existing path from two small pits, fracturing the old pipe outward and towing the new one in behind, so the ground between the pits is never opened. Open trench excavates the whole run. Bursting protects surfaces and usually costs more per foot; open trench costs less per foot but you pay to restore everything you dug through.

Can my water line be replaced without digging up the yard? Often yes, but not always, and the deciding factor is the condition and material of the existing pipe rather than your preference. Copper and lead usually pull. Rotted galvanized usually has to be burst rather than pulled, because it snaps under tension. If the route has to change, or the line shares a trench with other services, or other utilities sit in the path, open trench is the honest answer.

Is pipe bursting better than directional boring? They solve different problems. Bursting reuses the existing pipe path, so it only works where that path is still the right route and the old pipe can be located. Boring creates a new path through undisturbed ground, which is what you need when the route has to move or the old line cannot be reused. Boring is decided by what is on the surface, bursting by what is in the ground.

Does pipe bursting require a markout in New Jersey? Yes. New Jersey defines excavation to include any operation in which material in the ground is moved, removed or otherwise displaced, and expressly names cable and pipe plowing, so trenchless methods are excavation like any other. Notice to the One Call center is required not less than three and not more than 10 business days before work begins, and mechanized equipment may not operate within two feet horizontally of a marked facility until it has been located by hand digging.

Will my sewer line be marked before you burst my water line? No, and this surprises people. New Jersey's definition of an underground facility expressly excludes storm drains and gravity sewers, so a gravity sewer lateral is not marked out. It has to be located some other way, which matters because bursting displaces soil sideways and can affect a line it never contacts.

Can pipe bursting increase my water line size? Yes, and that is one of its real advantages. The bursting head enlarges the path as it goes, so a three quarter inch service can be replaced with a one inch service in the same pull. Pulling in place cannot do that, because the new pipe follows the hole the old one made.

Is trenchless cheaper than digging? Per foot, usually not. Per job, it often is, but only when there is something on top worth protecting. Concrete, pavers, asphalt and road patches are what make an open cut expensive, not the digging. Across open lawn, an open trench is normally both cheaper and technically better, since the pipe can be bedded and inspected before it is buried.

What happens if the pull or the burst fails partway? We open cut, at the price already written on your quote as a separate line item. Nobody can see a rock ledge, a buried boulder or a pipe about to snap from the surface at quoting time, which is exactly why the fallback belongs on the estimate rather than in a phone call halfway through the job.

Can you line my water service instead of replacing it? Lining is mostly a sewer technique, and on a residential water service it is rarely the right answer. A liner takes up inside diameter, and a service line that is already three quarters of an inch does not have diameter to give away. Replacing the pipe, by pulling, bursting or trenching, is normally the better outcome for the same disruption.
